1 million ways to waste time

Posted by Bill Sluben on August 19, 2010

If you check email every five minutes that’s 96 times/day.  Figure 1 minute per email check and you’ve just burned off an hour-and-a-half.

Throw in checking your facebook, posting to facebook, checking/posting to Twitter, checking in with FourSquare, reading blogs, etc… and suddenly you’ve salted away 4 hours of your day.  You’re there for 8.

Yes technology makes it easier for all of us to do our jobs.  But at the risk of sounding cynical, it amazes me how much we all spend on-line when we could be meeting people face to face (remember that?) or finishing up the day earlier to spend with family and friends.

Technology, and especially social media, is the heroin for wired world.  Without out it there is a void in our lives.  Whether that void is one of diminished self importance, fear of being disconnected from social circles, or just a desire to leave our imprint; we need to re-assess the important things in our lives:  faith, family and service to others.

Now I will get off of my soapbox…
